Turiyatalks with Soma Basu - How journalism has evolved in the digital era - S7 Ep 3

Ms. Soma Basu is a senior journalist and deputy editor at The Hindu. She has over 30 years of experience in journalism which made her ideal for this interview. She initiated with the introduction of her era which she labelled as ‘type-writer era’. She said ‘It was hard to manage back then and I couldn’t imagine using typewriters now’. In her optics, ‘Social media has changed the meaning of journalism because it works with FIRST & FAST algorithm.’ She explained how a journalist doesn’t bother cross-checking before publishing and according to her ‘Technology has made life easier but have bought problems along with it plus earlier perspective was narrow & limited but visuality mattered’. In her opinion, journalists should always stick to what’s authentic and should keep their language simple but informative. When asked about the difference between eras of journalism, she said “Journalism will not change, review processes will.”

In her view, ‘It takes years to build a reputation and few seconds to ruin it so journalists should focus on being honest.’ By winding up, she said that she loved the name ‘Turiya’ and appreciated Turiya and Team for their passion and courage.
